21 dead in Mexican gang gun battle near US border - USATODAY.com

HERMOSILLO, Mexico (AP) — Twenty-one people are dead in Mexico following a massive gun battle between rival drug and migrant-trafficking gangs near the U.S. border.

Prosecutors in northern Sonora state say the gun battle occurred in a sparsely populated area about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the Arizona border.

The state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that nine people were captured by police at the scene of Thursday’s shootings, six of whom had been wounded in the confrontation.

The area is a prime corridor for immigrant and drug smuggling.
